New Amtrak Cascades Airo train makes its first trip into Oregon A New Era of Rail Travel Arrives

Oregon rail travelers got their first look at the future of Amtrak Cascades service on July 23, 2026, when a new Airo trainset traveled into the state for the first time for testing.

The new trainset is designed to carry more than 300 passengers.

What is being tested?

During the test trip, the electric wheelchair lifts were tested at each station, as well as all the new digital equipment on board announcing arrivals by city. On board, 50+ Amtrak staff, along with ODOT and WSDOT employees were testing and evaluating the equipment along the route.

How were the trains funded?

The new trains were funded by the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act. Amtrak Cascades is primarily funded by ticket revenues, with the balance of operating costs paid for by the states of Oregon and Washington. Each state pays Amtrak through a contract to operate the service. As the new Airos come into service, the older Amfleet equipment will be transitioned from Cascades service and Oregon’s classic Talgos may find new service opportunities elsewhere.

What’s new about these new trains?

The new trains are more fuel efficient and produce 90% less particulate emissions in diesel operations. They were designed with our customers in mind, featuring:

• More comfortable and spacious seating and expansive windows
• Convenient power outlets throughout the train, and tray tables that hold digital devices and cups
• Improved accessibility, including onboard lifts, accessible restrooms and tables
• Spacious entryways and easier access to onboard amenities
• A cafe car serving Pacific Northwest-exclusive snacks, beverages and treat

Designed for the Pacific Northwest

The new train’s arrival was easy to recognize. Its exterior features the familiar Amtrak Cascades palette of evergreen, cream and mocha, along with graphics inspired by the mountains and landscapes of the Pacific Northwest.

Amtrak is introducing 83 new trains on routes throughout the United States. Making Oregon and Washington the starting point for one of the largest passenger-rail fleet modernization efforts in Amtrak history.

Testing Before Passenger Service

Amtrak Cascades expects to introduce two new train sets into service in the fall of 2026 while the remaining trains are manufactured and tested. The existing equipment will continue to serve the corridor during the transition.

Connecting Oregon Communities

Amtrak Cascades serves communities throughout Oregon, including Portland, Oregon City, Salem, Albany and Eugene. The service connects Oregon travelers with destinations across Washington and British Columbia, offering an alternative to driving and flying along the busy Interstate 5 corridor.
