Albany
(ALY)
A hidden gem of Oregon history and architecture
Explore colorful Queen Anne Victorian homes (known as the “painted ladies” of American architecture) and more than 700 historic buildings. But that’s not all. This friendly city is also home to museums, antiques shops, a colorful carousel studio and some of the Valley’s best brews, many within walking distance of the depot.
The Albany depot is among the oldest continuously-used rail stations in the United States. Its unique masonry was built with “Miracle Blocks,” hollow-core concrete blocks which were a significant technological accomplishment allowing for rapid construction while providing the look of coursed stone.
When you visit Albany, you’ll find yourself at the center of a region full of possibility. If you look to the west, the Oregon Coast beckons with its sandy beaches and rugged coastline. To the east, the mountains and forests of the Cascades are calling your name. Right here in the valley, vineyards, lakes, rivers and lots of curving back country roads are waiting to be explored.
Albany offers foodies a true farm-to-fork experience. Its proximity to rich farmlands, sustainably grown crops and naturally raised livestock attracts award-winning chefs whose creations compliment local vintners, distillers, and craft-brew artisans.
Albany is known as the rare metals capital of the world. Several local industries produce zirconium, hafnium, and titanium.
